Have a firm routine

Understanding yourself and the way you work most productively can be invaluable when you are taking on large projects which could sidetrack you from getting down to the act of writing. If you establish a daily routine which plays to your personal strengths, you will be much more likely to write fluidly and productively when you need to. If you work best with other people, make sure you have a strong team around you. If you are a night owl, give yourself time each evening to produce text when you can work uninterrupted. Establish a firm routine to suit your working preferences, and the writing will soon fall in to place. Our brains love and respond well to a set routine – tell your mind what to expect, and then make sure you stick to it to optimise the way you work and stay focused.

Work backwards from deadlines

Great time management is a fundamental attribute which all bid writers need to succeed. Each time you get a bid, sit down and plot your timescales for achieving it, working back from the date of submission. Break large projects in to components to keep yourself motivated throughout the weeks ahead, making sure you leave enough time for production and dispatch as part of your process.
